S&W Hammerless .32 S&W....finally |
Lead | |
|
Out shopping today and I found a pretty nice S&W Hammerless with a grip safety and a 3.5" barrel. It's tight and smooth with too many spots where
the nickel has left forever, but the price couldn't be beat. The sn is 105xxx. The grip safety is stuck and if anyone can suggest ways to check this and
put it right without harming the gun I'll be grateful. Can someone tell me anything about this little Smith or the holster? The holster that apparently has
housed this revolver since it was new is a brown flap holster with a plain vine stamped pattern. It has a simple belt loop sewn at the top and with one rivet
at the bottom. The only marks I see on the leather are the numbers "1 6 1" hand stamped on the loop. It has a brass post and slot fastener. I
surmise that, since there is a holster, this little jewel was carried, either as a police duty weapon or an outdoorsman's sidearm. In any case I have
wanted an old S&W to go with my great grandma's Owl Heads. Never to shoot. Just to respect and enjoy.

Hi Al
Your gun is the second model 91418 in 1902 to 170000 in 1909. If you look carefully at the notches on the cylinder you will see there is a little piece of hardened steel added to prevent peening from high speed use. I think that is one of the neater features of the pre 1909 S&W DA pistols. Is the safety stuck in or out? If it is in it could be that it is pinned or held by a screw. Stranger things have happened. If it is just rust penetrating oil might be the cure. Jim

I like those, and have one or two around - but I confess, if it were mine then a few rounds down range might be in it's future...
If you pull the grips and get a good desk lamp you can probably figure what is making the grip safety stick. |

Thanks guys....The safety is stuck in the "safe" position. Is it safe to shoot this with .32 short ammo? I sent a request to Kurt for info to join
the S&W Collectors Assn. I was bitten by the bug on this little fellow. Al

If it functions well when dry fired (chambers line up, trigger works as it should, etc.) and there is an absence of serious pitting internally it is probably
safe to shoot with .32 shorts. Those are pretty mild rounds to start with. I'd recommend a good cleaning, just to make sure of what you have.

at. The .32 short is a smaller diameter than the .32 S&W. and almost impossible to tell apart with out looking at the head stamps. do not use it if the
head stamp is .32 SHORT, .32 S C, .32 SCF, or .32 SH COLT.

Hi Al,
Have you got that little S&W Safety going yet? Has the WD-40 done any good ingetting the safety to work? Inquiring minds want to know. Jim

Jim; I haven't. I lubed it and put it in the safe after I broke my arm. After wearing the cast/splint for 5 weeks I developed tendonitis and have been
working one handed. I am looking forward to getting back to the range soon. Once I do that I'll get back on all the horses I have been letting graze. Al
