Those old N frames are comforting, and fun to shoot. Thanks for the pics, and for the articles too. I miss Skeeter's articles.

Yesterday I thought I may get some Range time with it, as it was in the Lower 60's here, but High winds and Over Cast skies Placed a dark cloud over me shooting it. I am certain with this new warm wave we have been getting her in Knoxville I will get time this week to sit down and have some Target fun with this revolver, and I currently have Two Hand loads worked out for it, that I hope will work well and group tight. Hello
I had Range duty yesterday so I took with me the .44 Special and the Two Loads I have worked up for it. Neither load is super hot, the first one was 7.5 Grains of Unique behind a 200 Grain Hornady XTP Copper Jacketed bullet. The second load was the same weight bullet but using 9.2 Grains of Blue Dot. I was Not impressed with the Group size of either load, but I think I am either Pulling the shots a little due to the revolver's Lighter Barrel, or perhaps the Crimp is still a little strong on them. I will return for range duty this Thursday and see if it can group better and concentrate more on holding it more steady..

Kurt - I haven't done much work with the .44s, but I've had better luck with the .44 mag as far as accuracy. The only .44 Spec. I've had any
experience with has been a Model 24-4 - and that has been limited. (Well, I don't count the Charter Arms Bulldog.)
You might check your bore/forcing cone/bullet diameter. A hotter load may well serve to tighten groups. |

Hey Kurt ,
Thats not too bad . How far out are you shootin ?? I just loaded some 220 gr JHP `s and I have to put them on paper too . I did a .5 spread with Unique starting at 6.5 to 7.5 . I`ll try it from a rest out to around 50 feet . I`m kind of new at this , its the first time I put my reloads on paper if you can believe it . We always shoot outside at the plate range . So I know their pretty close , as long as I knock down the steel !! lol I`ll keep you posted on mine and you keep up the good work !! Ralph |

Hello Jim & Ralph
I know it is Me, Not the gun. It shows in the two different Targets how I Pulled Two shots as they are both in the same area being 11 & 5 O-Clock. I will have to over come it by concentrating more, when using a Light weight barrel like my Pre-24 Has. I Plan to shoot some more today as I have Range duty again and will leave early to be alone and not bothered as I try once again to Tighten up these groups... H.D. Hello
I returned to the range with the New hand loads I had using Vihtavuori N-350 Powder dispensed at 9.9 Grains with a 200 Grain Hornady XTP Bullet they had the velocity advertised at 1040 F.P.S. and this was the starting load requirement. It showed much more consistency than any of the loads I loaded with Unique as far as groups went. Extraction was fine, Primers displayed a slight flattening, recoil was modest and no case stretch was Observed. This Powder Burns extra clean and meters excellent compared to the rest, I feel it is a Great Powder to Play with. I am still trying to get used to this Lighter profile barrel, but the groups I obtained while using the Vihtavuori Powder Intrigued me to expand and play with it till I get smaller more precise groups. Pictures to follow once the Sun Rises here in East Tennessee. "Yeah, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, ... I shall Fear no Evil, as I carry with me My Loaded S&W".. |

Lookin good Hammer !!
Your right about the lighter bbl . I compare these 44 spl`s to a M 25 or a M29 and there`s a huge weight difference !! Shooting them off hand , you can feel the difference !! Keep us posted . Ralph |

rfgtks3 wrote: Hello Ralph I find this caliber and Revolver very touchy. I Guess that is why Elmer Keith was so fond of it due to it being a hard one to Master in the ten ring with tight group's. I will eventually get there with enough practice with it...and I find it equal in challenge with the .32 S&W Long round...H.D. "Yeah, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, ... Kurt, let me suggest you trying 240 grain cast bullets sized to fit the throats. I have had better results with 240 to 250 gr. bullets as far as accuracy in
my 44 spl. loads.
I tried to get an answer from Mr. Jinks about the Baughman sight but didn't get a clear answer. It may have been added at a later date but I don't think so. |

NKJ NUT wrote: Hello Jessie I did try some Hornady Semi-Wad cutter lead bullets and they showed great accuracy but shot very High. While holding at the Six O-Clock Position of the target they were Two inces High of the Ten ring area. When I switched to 200 Grain Copper Jacketed Hornady bullets it Placed the group in the Ten ring area after I brought the rear sight up from hit's 2" below the Ten ring area. For some reason this pre-24 does not like the heavier Bullets. On the Subject of your Baughman front sight seeing that the Original sight Pin's do not look Molested, I doubt it was ever fooled with, and like mine, It may have been a special order option that would not show up in any of the Original invoices as I Understand it, Back then special orders were hand carried to the revolver Builders bench, then carried out without any notations most times..H.D. My revolver has the same height front sight as a model 27. There is no indication anyone has touched it. This makes the revolver fine for the very lightest
loads and 180 or 200 gr. bullets but it shoots dreadfully high with heavier bullets like the 44 spl was designed around.

Hey Jessie ,
Well , I`ve had different conversations about front sights , when the front sight pins are flush , when the gun is finished or blued . You see some older nickel guns with blued sight bases and the pins are`nt finished smooth with the barrel . There`s all kinds of ideas about that . As far as your front sight pin , it looks raised and not flush . But I don`t know for sure , I`m a rookie at this stuff !! lol Like hammer said , if it was a last minute change after the gun was finished , those factory gun smiths could have changed it out . So that would mean the pins would have been raised and not flush . Ralph |

I would suggest trying various powders to see if there is one that your gun likes. I Have not had that much experience with 44 special reloading, but trying
dozens of loads made with 6 or more powders have been very telling for me in the past in .38 special, 357 Magnum. and .41 Magnum. In those 3 cases the winner
was AL-7 (.38 special and .357 Mag.) and HERCO with the .41 Mag.
